About us

A friendly club built around the love of the game

We're a community chess club in Hull where the only entry requirement is wanting to play.

St Andrews Chess Club crest

St Andrews Chess Club exists for one simple reason: chess is better shared.

We're a friendly community club of around 25 members, based at Marist Hall on Cottingham Road in Hull. Over a board, age, background and job title disappear — there's just two people, sixty-four squares, and the oldest game in the world. Week in, week out, our members gather to play it: beginners learning how the knight moves, old hands plotting deep combinations, and everyone in between.

We're one of the most active clubs in the Hull & East Riding Chess Association, fielding several teams across the local leagues — from the 4-board and 6-board divisions to cup competitions like the Atkinson Cup. Whatever your strength, there's very likely a team you could play for.

Alongside league chess we run our own internal events through the season — a Club Championship and graded tournaments — so there's always something to play for, win or lose. You can follow all our fixtures and results right here on the site, straight from the official league system.

And whatever the result on the board, the welcome at the door is the same: whether you're nervously coming for the first time or you've played for fifty years, you'll find a friendly face, a free board, and a game waiting for you.

What we stand for

The spirit of the club

Everyone gets a game

No one sits out, no one is too good or too new. If you’ve come to play, we’ll make sure you do.

Friendly first

We take the chess seriously and ourselves a lot less so. Expect good humour, gentle rivalry and the odd cup of tea.

Learn by playing

The fastest way to improve is to play people better than you — and ours are always happy to share what they know.

Open to all

Young or old, beginner or expert, we’re proud to be a club where anyone in the community can pull up a chair.
