A brilliant start for young players

Chess is one of the best games a child can learn — and our club is a warm, friendly place for juniors to begin.

Sharper thinking

Chess builds focus, memory and problem-solving — skills that help in the classroom and beyond.

Patience & resilience

Every game teaches you to plan ahead, handle setbacks and think before you act.

Confidence & friends

A welcoming, screen-free way to meet people, take turns and win (and lose) gracefully.

What parents should know

  • Ages 8 and up. Junior members are welcome from age 8 — and adults of any age are always welcome too.
  • No need to stay. You’re very welcome to stay and watch, but you’re just as welcome to drop off and pick up — whatever suits you.
  • All abilities welcome. Total beginners are taught from scratch — no need to know the rules.
  • Friendly, patient mentors. Experienced members enjoy helping younger players learn and improve.
  • Equipment provided. Sets and boards are there for everyone — just bring your child.
  • Affordable. Junior membership is just £4 per month, and the first month is completely free — so they can try before you commit.
  • Safeguarding. We have a safeguarding policy and a designated safeguarding officer, and our junior chess is overseen by a DBS-checked organiser.
  • A dedicated junior hour is on the way. For now juniors play alongside our main club night; we’re also setting up a separate junior hour focused on learning and practice.
